UAE sets out new rules for tankers

The United Arab Emirates' (UAE) Federal Transport Authority (FTA) has issued new regulations for foreign-flagged tankers transiting its waters and visiting its ports.

According to the FTA, foreign-flagged crude and product tankers must be less than 25 years old and must be double-hulled to sail in Emirati waters.

Vessels unloading or discharging cargo must be classed by a member of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) or UAE classification society TASNEEF.

All tankers subject to the regulations must be constructed or adapted primarily to carry crude oil and products in bulk, the announcement said.

The UAE has announced a series of measures aimed at readying itself for ratification of the Maritime Labour Convention 2006, which is set to enter into force on 20 February 2018.
